That’s why when you call around for an estimate for your car repair you get different prices. This is generally a trial and error process and it can be frustrating. Not all of us know about cars or know anyone with mechanical skills, not to mention that many of us don’t know what to look for in a car repair shop.

In exasperation, we would just take our cars to the dealership to make sure it is repaired right, unfortunately, this can be pricey.

Before you go to the repair shop, do some research about every service center around you and if you don’t even know where to start, ask for recommendations from your friends. It is also important to pay attention to first impressions but be careful because looks can be deceiving.

Who really knows what goes on in those shops? But, at least, go check it out.

*Make sure that the repair shop is licensed by the state or by the local law.

* Look for car repair shops that honors the warranty of your car.

* The repair shop has to have the capacity to do the needed repair for your car. Do not leave it alone with the mechanics, stay with them when they look at it. By doing this, you can avoid being ripped off and they have no way to make you pay for things they never fixed on your car.

* It is also practical to ask for the estimated cost of the repair expenses and have a copy of the signed written cost estimate for the repair/s to be done. Make sure that the estimate is itemized and defines the condition or parts needed to be repaired and, if possible, the price of the spare parts. It should also include the labor charge per hour.

Check out the shop through every means available to you, ask recommendation from friends, neighbors, office mates or check the Internet. You can go through blogs or forums where people post or discuss their experiences with car repair shops.

It is best to look for the right repair shop before you even need one. Give yourself peace of mind and research beforehand. Finding the right one will surely save you wads of cash in your car repair expenses.

Scott Stephens is a spokesperson for Auto Repair Report.
